Every year the Gilfus Education Group assists hundreds of academic institutions in evaluating their existing LMS or course management system. In addition, many academic institutions embark on their own LMS Evaluation projects to understand which LMS is the best for them. For various reasons each academic institution selects a specific application, be it open source or proprietary or because of ease of use, costs or, functional and pedagogical reasons.

During the past five years, there have been considerable changes to the options available to colleges for Learning Management Systems (formerly known as course management systems). As an independent consulting organization, the Gilfus Education Group has worked hands-on with a wide variety of operational processes and technologies used by education institutions, and can provide insightful guidance on both traditional and new options during the LMS evaluation process.

Our consultants have intimate familiarity with virtually every Learning Management System currently on the market. Each LMS has its pros, cons, and shades of grey. Similarly, each vendor takes different positions and approaches to supporting online education. We assess the landscape and match each system’s nuances with our clients’ specific needs.

Choosing the right LMS

Several past clients have been strongly committed to supporting and participating in open-source movements. For them, it was important to choose an LMS platform that allowed them to actively contribute new code and functional capabilities. Other clients have been much more focused on choosing the LMS provider most committed to continuing innovation in its platform. An essential part of any RFP process is to determine which of these factors is the most and least important to you. This determination will ensure that your evaluation process accurately gathers all of the data that you will need to choose the best LMS for your college.
