Gates Foundation Ventures into Next Gen Learning Challenges

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced the Next Gen Learning Challenges which will provide grants to innovators, build evidence of what works, and foster an engaged community of professionals committed to helping students and young adults prepare for college and successfully complete their postsecondary educations.

The Foundation has engaged several leading edge organizations to shape the initiative, including EDUCAUSE, the League for Innovation in the Community College, the International Association of K-12 Online Learning, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The ilfus education Group is watching these efforts closely to see if they can impact the existing challenges in education.

The Next Gen Learning Challenges grant competition will open later this summer, with the first wave focusing primarily on higher education and soliciting grant proposals for:

* Deploying open core courseware
* Deepening learner engagement through interactive, online technologies
* Scaling blended learning
* Mobilizing learning analytics
